BOXING GIVEN A GREAT BOOST BY FROCH AND PASCAL BEFORE MILLIONS ON TV

alt Sanity of boxing was returned to the Sweet Science last night at the FM arena in Notttingham as two serious gladiators gave of their very best last night. Carl Froch, the sporting hero of Nottingham, UK, and Canadia's Jean Pascal revealed skills and thrills that was the best tonic for boxing in the year 2008.
This was boxing without gimmicks and was for the most coveted WBC World Championship. If boxing is to forge it way out of the doldrums it is real championships contests like this that will restore greatness to the Sweet Science.

The full distance of 12 rounds travelled by these two honest boxing athletes. Boxing is the sport where the object is to hit but not be hit. The quality and earnestness of these two fine warriors made this not possible last night. Neither gave a quarter or asked for a quarter. The exchange of blows was incessant and two lesser fit boxers would have been beaten long before the 12th round and 36 minutes of quality action.

With the both boxers unbeaten before last night one would lose his unbeaten record and it was Jean Pascal, who brought credit to Canada. Carl Froch was selected by Boxing Action, along with David Haye, after the Amateur Commonwealth Games as a future World champion, so it gave this website an added thrill.

We also supported him being named as the WBC mandatory #1 rated boxer. We wish we had known more of Jean Pascal and heralded his claims.

This was ‘Rocky’ and  'Raging Bull'  without the staged Hollywood choreography. It was testing real and therefore believeable. Both boxers realized their courage, ability, skill and all other boxing assets were being pushed to the limited and they reacted like true warriors.

It was comforting to know that the mass audience that only terrestrial TV is able to offer in UK was able to share in this

This, now, was the toe-to-toe stuff of the playground and comic book, each hitting the other at precisely the same time on numerous occasions. Froch knew he was in the greatest test of his heart, class and skill. And the 31-year-old was showing a prime time Saturday-night television audience that he could deliver all of that plus the box-office dazzle produced by all the best.

Both Carl and his promoter, Mick Hennessy have declare that they wanted the greatest prize in boxing a WBC World Championship. Even when Joe Calzaghe was the daunting king of he all surveyed in the super-middleweight division both Carl and Mick refused to consider any easier alternatives including the tinfoil titles

This has to be admired and they both richly deserve the reward and the benefits that will now come from achieving the ultimate professional boxing accolade.

“You have to give every credit, Pascal came and had a go,' said a delighted Froch.

“He wasn't here to lay down, this guy was world class, a top quality opponent I did very well to outclass, which I think I did.”

As early as the first round Froch set the pace began with a lightning flurry that rocked Pascal. However, sudden return fire caused Carl to shake his own head to telegraph the message that it looked better than it was after being caught on the ropes. However, it hurt.

As the second round began the crowd had recognized the promise that the real thrills that only boxing is able to produce was being made by these two genuine gladiators. It was a well targeted punch in the rib cage area that clinched the round for Carl.

Soon into round 3 two accurate uppercuts from Carl had there been a Richter style earthquake recording on the chin of Jean it would have whizzed upwards and proved that there are granite chins. However, it was not a one street and powerful hooks from Jean reminded Carl that his opponent was always going to be dangerous.

This was the pattern of the fight with neither fighter out of the danger zone in every round although it was Carl that was building-up the extra points.

As the 11th round ended the fight looked safe for Carl if he was able to avoid the still dangerous punches of the Canadian challenger. Avoid disaster he did and with neither boxer refusing to give ground rightfully the WBC Championship was won in admirable fashion by Carl Froch.

Thank you gentlemen for completely overshadowing the trend of matches made for the real purpose of making money and returning credibility, amongst other things, to boxing.
